MOUNTAIN GREEN — A 7-month-old boy was killed Tuesday in a rollover on icy Interstate 84 in Weber Canyon.

The Utah Highway Patrol said a westbound Honda Odyssey van carrying five people went out of control and rolled off the right side of the highway. The UHP said in a news release that the child was ejected from the vehicle and died after being taken to a hospital. Three others in the van suffered minor injuries.

The UHP said it was investigating the crash. Troopers said the victim was from Evanston, Wyoming.

The Mountain Green Fire Protection District said firefighters reported several slide-offs in that stretch of the Weber Canyon highway, where bridges are often icy in the winter.

Later Tuesday, the Utah Department of Transportation issued an advisory urging drivers to slow down in the winding canyon stretch between Mountain Green and the mouth of the canyon at Uintah and South Weber.

“Weather conditions have created a fine film of ice on parts of the roadway surface,” UDOT said. “The ice is hard to see and typically forms on areas of the interstate that are shaded. Motorists should drive with caution and be prepared for ice at any moment.”

UDOT noted that several crashes have occurred in the icy stretch in the past several days. Long-standing signs in the canyon have warned drivers to go slowly and watch for ice, especially on bridges.

UHP Sgt. Cameron Roden said Wednesday there were 19 crashes along I-84 in the area from Dec. 15 through Tuesday, most of them in the canyon section.

The National Weather Service on Wednesday issued a winter storm warning along the Wasatch Back, especially in the Ogden Valley, from 6 a.m. Thursday through 5 a.m. Saturday. The agency is warning of heavy snow with possible accumulations between 5 and 15 inches that could make travel “very difficult” as Utahns hit the road for the holiday.

For most Northern Utah cities, rain and snow are forecast every day at least through early next week.

On its winter driving tips page, UDOT recommends that drivers go slowly on snow or ice, no matter the type of vehicle; leave extra room between vehicles in front of you; brake early and slowly; and never slam on the brakes.
