McDonald’s sales fell short of expectations in the second quarter as coronavirus restrictions shuttered stores in China and higher prices took a toll on U.S. demand.

The Chicago burger giant said its revenue fell 3% to $5.72 billion in the April-June period. That was short of Wall Street’s forecast of $5.8 billion, according to analysts polled by FactSet.

A deal on Medicaid expansion in North Carolina is within reach after both legislative chambers passed competing measures before ending their annual session. North Carolina is among a dozen states yet to accept the federal government’s offer to cover people who make too much to be insured by traditional Medicaid but too little to obtain private insurance. GOP leaders were adamantly opposed to expansion for years but have come around based on fiscal and health considerations. Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper has been pushing for expansion, which could cover 600,000 low-income adults. Right now negotiations are idling, as the Senate wants additional health care reforms.

Dan Goldman, who served as lead Democratic counsel in former President Donald Trump’s first impeachment, would be among the richest members of Congress if he’s successful in his bid to represent a newly redrawn district in New York City.

After 21 idle wells were found to be leaking methane — some of them explosive levels of it — in Bakersfield, California in May and June, the California Air Resources Board told the Associated Press that it’s not tallying leaks from idle wells. That means officials can’t include those leaks in their total emissions counts. That's significant because methane is a potent greenhouse gas and law requires the state to ramp down all of its carbon emissions to zero. The state plans to use new satellite sensors to get a count. And a new proposal in the US Senate would provide hundreds of millions of dollars to address this issue nationwide.

Country Music Hall of Famer Barbara Mandrell retired from music two decades ago, but the Grand Ole Opry still feels like home to her. The 73-year-old Grammy winner made a rare public appearance at the Opry's Saturday night show to celebrate her 50th anniversary of becoming an Opry member. The actor, multi-instrumentalist and singer turned millions of fans onto country music through her popular TV show with her sisters and her crossover hits like “Sleeping Single in a Double Bed,” and “If Loving You is Wrong (I Don’t Want to be Right).” An all-female lineup of performers, including Carrie Underwood, CeCe Winans and Linda Davis, performed her songs, while Mandrell enthusiastically applauded from the crowd.

The Supreme Court’s decision to repeal a woman’s federal constitutional right to abortion has scrambled the political dynamics heading into the November elections, when control of Congress is at stake. A half-dozen of the most vulnerable House members — all of them women and all representing swaths of suburban voters — see the issue as one that could help them win in an otherwise difficult political climate. But it's not clear whether the focus on abortion alone may be enough to save many of these Democrats, given that they're running for reelection at a time of high inflation and frustration with President Joe Biden’s performance.

Former Philippine President Fidel Valdez Ramos, a U.S.-trained ex-general who saw action in the Korean and Vietnam wars and played a key role in a 1986 pro-democracy uprising that ousted a dictator, has died. He was 94. His longtime aide, Norman Legaspi, told The Associated Press that Ramos had been in and out of the hospital in recent years due to a heart condition and had suffered from dementia. The cigar-chomping Ramos, known for his visionary “win-win” outlook, attention to detail, a thumbs-up sign and firm handshake, served as president from 1992 to 1998, succeeding the democracy icon, Corazon Aquino. She was swept into the presidency in 1986 after Ramos helped lead an army-backed revolt that toppled dictator Ferdinand Marcos.

Rising concern over the impact of a potential Russian gas cutoff is fueling the debate in Germany over whether the country should switch off its last three nuclear power plants as planned at the end of this year. The door to some kind of extension appeared to open a crack after the Economy Ministry in mid-July announced a new “stress test” on the security of electricity supplies. It’s supposed to take into account a tougher scenario than a previous test, concluded in May, that found supplies were assured. Since then, Russia has reduced natural gas supplies through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline to Germany to 20% of capacity amid tensions over the war in Ukraine.

British musician Sting has interrupted a concert in Warsaw to warn his audience that democracy is under attack worldwide. He also denounced the war in Ukraine as “an absurdity based upon a lie.” Sting asked a popular Polish actor to join him onstage to translate his appeal that democracy is worth fighting for despite it being messy and frustrating at times “because the alternative to democracy is a nightmare.” The 70-year-old musician delivered his message in a country that borders Ukraine, where Russia launched its invasion on Feb. 24 that has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions. He called the war in Ukraine “an absurdity based upon a lie.”

Britain’s Prince Charles is facing more questions over his charities after a newspaper reported that one of his funds accepted a 1 million-pound ($1.2 million) donation from relatives of Osama bin Laden. The Sunday Times reported that the Prince of Wales’s Charitable Fund received the money in 2013 from Bakr bin Laden and his brother Shafiq. Both are half-brothers of the former al Qaida leader, who was killed by U.S. special forces in Pakistan in 2011. Charles’ Clarence House office said the decision to accept the money was taken by the charity’s trustees, not the prince. It said “thorough due diligence was undertaken in accepting this donation.”

Lebanon's Hezbollah is airing drone footage of Israeli gas production barges in a disputed gas field in the Mediterranean Sea. The Iranian-backed militant group on Sunday aired the drone footage of the Karish gas field as senior U.S. energy envoy Amos Hochstein was to arrive in Beirut. Hochstein was to participate in maritime border negotiations between Lebanon and Israel. Israel earlier this month shot down three unarmed Hezbollah drones over Karish, which Lebanon's caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati criticized as an unnecessary risk. The two countries, which have been officially at war since Israel’s creation in 1948, both claim some 860 square kilometers (330 square miles) of the Mediterranean Sea.

When sanctions made the Fortress Russia he helped build seem less impregnable, Maxim Oreshkin came up with a signature gambit to try and break the economic siege.

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has confirmed she will visit four Asian countries this week but made no mention of a possible stop in Taiwan that has riled Beijing, which claims the island as its own territory. Pelosi said in a statement she is leading a congressional delegation to Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan to discuss trade, the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, security and democratic governance. Pelosi has yet to confirm news reports that said she might stop in Taiwan. China's ruling Communist Party has warned against visiting the island. Beijing sees contact between American officials and Taiwan as encouragement to make its decades-old de facto independence permanent. The Defense Ministry has warned of “strong measures to thwart any external interference.”

African countries’ efforts at restitution of artifacts from institutions in Europe are now blossoming with the return of pieces that once were thought unattainable. But many objects are still out of reach, and some officials worry they don't even know the true extent of what was taken abroad. Pressure is growing on authorities in Britain in particular after Nigeria and Germany signed a deal for the return of hundreds of artifacts known as the Benin Bronzes and France vowed to return 26 pieces known as the Abomey Treasures. One official says British authorities should “swallow their pride” and return treasures.

China's space agency says debris from a rocket that boosted part of China’s new space station into orbit has fallen into the sea in the Philippines. The agency said most of the final stage of the Long March-5B rocket burned up after entering the atmosphere. The location of the “landing area” cited by the announcement is in waters southeast of the Philippine city of Puerto Princesa on the island of Palawan. There was no immediate word from Philippine authorities about whether anyone on the ground was affected. China has faced criticism in the past for allowing rocket stages to fall to Earth uncontrolled.

Officials say a drone-borne explosive device has detonated at the headquarters of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, injuring six people. The explosion at the headquarters in the city of Sevastopol on the Crimean peninsula that Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014 caused the cancellation of observances of Russia’s Navy Day holiday. The Black Sea Fleet’s press service said the drone appeared to be homemade. It described the explosive device as “low-power” but Sevastopol mayor Mikhail Razvozhaev said six people were injured in the blast. There was no immediate information on where the drone began its flight.

More than 1,000 years after his death in what is now Poland, a Danish king whose nickname is known to the world through wireless Bluetooth technology is at the center of an archaeological dispute. A Polish researcher and a Swedish archaeologist claim that they have pinpointed the probable burial site for King Harald Bluetooth Gormsson in a small village in northwestern Poland, an area that once had ties with the Vikings. The evidence they cite is an old gold coin-like object with Harald's name in Latin on it, coming from a tomb in the Wiejkowo church, and an old chronicle of the land's history translated from Latin into Polish that mentions the king.

Perhaps the reason why the Mona Lisa maintains her famously enigmatic smile is that she benefits from one of Paris’ best-kept secrets: An underground cooling system that’s been helping her cope with sweltering heat that has broken temperature records in Europe. The little-known network lies underneath Europe’s biggest “urban cold” system in the French capital. Water is pumped from one of three locations lying by the Seine. These units need electricity to function, and in this case, it's 100% renewable energy from solar panels and wind turbines. Paris City Hall has signed an ambitious contract to triple the size of this network by 2042 to 252 kilometers (157 miles) and make it the largest in the world.

The playoff-hopeful Seattle Mariners are holding their collective breath that All-Star rookie Julio Rodríguez isn’t seriously injured. Rodríguez was hit on the back of his right hand near the wrist as he swung awkwardly at a pitch in the eighth inning Saturday night at Houston. He struck out, but played defense in the bottom half before exiting in the ninth. Seattle manager Scott Servais said the outfielder would get X-rays later Saturday. The 21-year-old Rodríguez is batting .274 with 18 homers and 57 RBIs. Elsewhere, the NL East-leading Mets go for their sixth straight victory and Yankees slugger Aaron Judge looks to extend his incredible tear since the All-Star break.

Senegal is holding a legislative election. It's a vital test for opposition parties in the West African nation who are trying to minimize the ruling party's influence before the 2024 presidential election. They are worried that President Macky Sall may seek a third term. In Sunday's vote, 165 deputies will be elected in a politically tense atmosphere in the West African nation. Violent protests broke out last year after Sall’s main opponent was arrested on rape charges. Senegal, with 17 million people, is known for its stability in a region that has seen coup d’etats in three countries since 2020. Sunday's election will give a clearer indication of what could happen in Senegal's presidential election in 2024.

Two people are running to be Britain’s next prime minister, but a third presence looms over the contest: Margaret Thatcher. Almost a decade after her death, the former prime minister casts a powerful spell over Britain's Conservative Party. In the race to replace Boris Johnson as Conservative leader and prime minister, both Foreign Secretary Liz Truss and former Treasury chief Rishi Sunak claim to embody the values of Thatcher. Truss even dresses in outfits that evoke the Iron Lady. But while Conservatives adore Thatcher, she is a contentious figure elsewhere in Britain. Critics see her as an intransigent ideologue whose free-market policies frayed social bonds and gutted industrial communities.

Shohei Ohtani hit an early three-run homer, and Luis Rengifo and David Fletcher each had a two-run double during a five-run eighth inning that rallied the Los Angeles Angels past the Texas Rangers 9-7. Marcus Semien and Meibrys Viloria homered for the Rangers, who won the first two games of the series. Ohtani launched his 22nd homer in the third, but the Angels trailed 7-4 going into the eighth. Fletcher lined a two-run double to bring Los Angeles within 7-6. He scored on a wild pitch to tie it, and Rengifo followed with a double into right-center to put the Angels on top.
